Excellent support from L on a complex VAT issue
I recently had a fairly complex query concerning a backdated VAT registration, retrospective VAT payments and the interaction with the Flat Rate Scheme.
I particularly want to recognise Ella, who put a considerable amount of effort into getting to the bottom of my concerns. Rather than simply providing reassurance, she went back through the historic records, prepared a detailed reconciliation covering my previous and current VAT returns, investigated a discrepancy I had identified and followed up on my remaining questions until I could understand how the figures fitted together.
What I appreciated most was her willingness to keep working through the issue when I needed more than a high-level explanation. The eventual reconciliation gave me the clarity and confidence I needed to approve the return, and she also took the initiative to make the necessary entries in FreeAgent and explain what had been done.
Ella was patient, responsive and professional throughout, and the amount of work she personally put into resolving the matter was very much appreciated.

Excellent accountants and business support
I am just completing my first year trading as a Limited Company. Aardvark have been excellent . I was rather nervous about the accounting side of my business but they have made it very easy. All the systems work and when I have had a query it is dealt with very quickly.
I would highly recommend them .

Just closed down my account with Aardvark (as just retired) having been with them since 2018. If you're looking for a software based, PS contractor solution then they provide great service at good value. They have sorted any bumps in the road over the entire time I was with them, including an extended close-down phase waiting for HMRC to sort various issues.
Staff have been excellent to deal with from Ryan/Louisa and all of the various "Support" teams (including Leonie, Lauren, Cali, Freya and Grace to name but a few).
Recommended.

Used to be good but sadly going downhill
I've been a client of Aardvark for about four years, and when I signed up they were good - a personal accountant who kept in touch, FreeAgent was used for salary and tax returns and everything was accessible at-a-glance. Unfortunately, they have started to become a generic corporate accountant. I no longer get monthly payroll notices or quarterly instructions of the amount of Employer NI to pay. The tax section of freeagent isn't up to date so previous returns are all flagged as late and incomplete. It's practically impossible to predict and set aside personal tax liability as so much of their backend processes have been moved off FreeAgent. Every time you call, you speak to someone else, who doesn't really seem to understand me or my company.
They seem to have forgotten what's useful for clients - every change they've made recently is to suit them, at the cost of clients. Now looking around for an alternative.
Edit: despite the quick response, nobody has contacted me. Sadly, I'm not surprised.

My experience with Costly advice, poor communication and no accountabilityrdvark was…
I signed up with Aardvark in around mid-February 2026 and had an onboarding call. After that, I heard virtually nothing.
When I eventually called them in March to ask what was happening, I was told words to the effect of, “Oh, they must have forgotten about you.” That unfortunately set the tone for the rest of my experience.
By the end of July, my payroll still had not been properly sorted, despite this being one of the basic services I had engaged them to manage. I was repeatedly left chasing for updates, trying to understand what had and had not been done, and dealing with delays that should never have happened.
More seriously, I relied on their professional advice regarding the structure of my limited company. They recommended a particular arrangement, charged me to put it in place, and then later raised concerns about the same structure they had advised and implemented. Instead of taking ownership and resolving the issue, I was left needing to obtain independent specialist advice and move to another accountant.
Between professional advice, corrective work and the cost of changing accountants, I estimate their mistakes have cost me around £2,500, before even accounting for the time and stress involved.
Mistakes can happen, but being forgotten after onboarding, waiting months for basic payroll administration, receiving contradictory advice and then being left to pay for the consequences is not an acceptable level of service.
I have now moved elsewhere and would not use or recommend Aardvark based on my experience.

In relation to the company structure, before becoming a client you contacted us with specific instructions to amend your company's share structure by replacing the Model Articles and introducing alphabet shares. At that stage, you advised that the shares were to be held between yourself and your civil partner, and based on the information provided to us, we confirmed that we could assist with preparing the legal documentation and implementing the changes you had requested.
During your Welcome Call, we discussed your circumstances in greater detail and established that your position differed from the information originally provided to us. As a result, our advice changed to reflect the updated information. We explained that, based on your actual circumstances, the proposed share structure could present additional tax risks from HMRC's perspective and discussed the potential implications. Our advice was based on the information available to us at each stage, and where that information changed, our advice was updated accordingly.
Regarding communication, there was a short period where your Client Director was unexpectedly absent due to emergency surgery, which may have resulted in some delays. However, our inboxes and telephone lines continued to be monitored by the wider team to ensure support remained available throughout this period. We appreciate that any delay can be frustrating and apologise if our communication did not meet your expectations.
We always strive to provide professional advice based on each client's individual circumstances and the information available at the time. Whilst we are disappointed to read your review, we wish you every success with your new accountant and your business going forward.
Trustworthy and knowledgeable accounting firm
I've been working with Aardwark Accounting for the past eight years as an IT contractor, and I couldn't be happier with the service they've provided.
